The purpose of this walk through is to create a working *ATHENA* setup on the scratch disk of one of the centrally managed *Fedora 8* machines. This walk through works successfully on on my desktop machine &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;iftsub041012&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. I&amp;#039;ve assumed you are using &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;bash&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, if you&amp;#039;re using &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;csh&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, change &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;*.sh&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; to &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;*.csh&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, and all variable definitions from &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;export A=b&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt; to &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;set A b&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt;. If you are not using a Fedora 8 machine, things may not work. In the case of using a &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Scientific Linux 4&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; machine, you can skip the legacy compiler step and the &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;--pretend-platform&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt; flag to &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;pacman&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

== Installing ATHENA ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;ATLAS&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; offline software &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;ATHENA&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; can be installed by following the steps described in this section.&lt;br /&gt;
For your convenience the steps are also implemented in the following script&lt;br /&gt;

=== Decide on a version to use and set up directories ===&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The latest stable version of &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;ATHENA&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; when writing this was &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;13.0.40&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
You&amp;#039;ll need a writable directory on a disk with lots of available space to install  (~6.5 Gb),&lt;br /&gt;
for this an external disk or the &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;/scratch&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt; partition is very useful. To simplify things declare&lt;br /&gt;
some environment variables and create the directory&lt;br /&gt;

=== Legacy compilers ===&lt;br /&gt;

&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Fedora 8&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;almost&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; compatible with &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;slc4&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; if you use the _legacy compilers_ &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;gcc34&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt; and &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;g++34&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt; (gcc 3.4.6) instead of the default compilers &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;gcc&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt; and &amp;lt;tt&amp;gt;g++&amp;lt;/tt&amp;gt; (gcc 4.1.2). To do this place links in to the legacy compilers named as the default compilers in front of your path&lt;br /&gt;

Packages are availible in the cvs http://atlas-sw.cern.ch/cgi-bin/viewcvs-atlas.cgi/offline/&lt;br /&gt;
Make sure that the version of the packages you download are compatible with your ATHENA release!&lt;br /&gt;
Add the cvs sub-directory to the workspace and unpack downloaded tar-ball there&lt;br /&gt;
